ELBA – Fred Stanley Lloyd (Stan) passed away peacefully at Pomerelle Place in Burley, Idaho on August 10, at the age of 94.

Stan was born December 2, 1931, to Fred T. and Flossie Parrish Lloyd in Elba, Idaho. Stan recalled starting school in 1938, in Elba, which he attended through eighth grade. He started high school in Malta at Raft River in 1946, but transferred to Albion High School from 1947 until he graduated in 1950. Albion High School was at the Albion Normal Teachers College, and Stan always spoke proudly of his education there.

After high school, Stan worked in Montana at the Hungry Horse Dam and was married to Lorene Rambo of Hansen, Idaho in 1951. He finished out the winter of 1951 working at the Naval supply depot in Clearfield, Utah before returning to Hansen, working for Lorene’s parents. He worked for a short time as a mechanic for Bailey’s Auto in Hansen and was drafted into the US Army in March 1952.

Stan was in the army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He did basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and went on to San Luis Obispo, California for signal school and engine and AC generators training. He shipped out of New York to Bremerhaven, Germany in September 1952. He served with the Army Construction Engineers in Verdun, France as a heavy equipment mechanic in a rock quarry and performed road construction in the old battlefields from World War One. He described a lot of this work as reconstruction of war-torn Europe from both WWI and WWII. He attended diesel school in Murnau, Germany as part of his training and was able to travel through many areas of Europe, including skiing in the German Alps near Garmish. He recounted excavating unexploded artillery and ordinance from both conflicts in the reconstruction work and shared his travels in the many slideshows he entertained the family with through the 1970s.

He returned from France via troop ship, the same as used in World War II and never had much love for watercraft as he described the roll, pitch, and yaw of the ship crossing the North Atlantic. Because he was stationed in Germany during the ten-year Allied occupation following World War II, he was technically a World War II veteran and was always proud of his military service. He was discharged out of the army at Fort Carson, Colorado, and headed home to Hansen. Lorene had been very ill since 1953, and passed away from brain cancer in September 1954, leaving Stan a 23 year-old widower with their infant son, Tom. Stan and Lorene’s parents helped raise Tom in those early years and Stan entered college at Idaho State in 1955. He worked at the dill factory in Hansen for Ernie Koke during the summer, and studying physical and chemical science during the school year until 1960.

He met Gloria Lambson during those years and they were married in 1956. Before long Stan had three more sons, Larry, Shane, and Todd.

Stan, his brother Arlo Lloyd, and John Darrington from Elba, began farming and ranching and developed land under the desert entry in Malta. Stan and Arlo began drilling wells in the early 1960s, and before long the name Lloyd was synonymous with water well construction in the area.

Stan and Gloria later divorced and he married Jeanette Freiburger in 1971.

Jeanette too, was recently divorced and brought five kids, Stephen, Jeanne, Virginia, Michael, and John to the partnership. Stan and Jeanette soon after added Alan and Jordan Lloyd.

The family built a new home in Elba in 1973, on the Lloyd Ranch. Well drilling, farming and ranching, dabbling in mining and by 1980, working at EG&G ‘s Raft River Geothermal plant dominated Stan’s time.

When the Department of Energy Raft River pilot power plant shut down in the early 80s, Stan continued to work for EG&G at various cleanup facilities, including Hill Field, Utah and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.

After retiring from EG&G, Stan continued well drilling, and tinkering around the ranch. He became involved with Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, volunteered as a geology guide at City of Rocks, helped build ACE Fire, volunteered with Cassia County Historical Society, and served a short stint on the Raft River Electric Board of Directors.

Stan was always very gregarious and never met a stranger he didn’t like. He was always there for a neighbor in need especially when it came to neighbors’ well or pump trouble around Elba.

Although the oldest of Fred and Flossie‘s children, Stan was preceded in death by all his siblings; his brother, Arlo (Bonnie) Lloyd; his sisters, Janis(Glenn) Carnahan, and Carma (Lyle) Firkins; his wives, Lorene Rambo, Gloria Lambson, and the love of his life, Jeanette Lloyd; and a son, Larry Lloyd.

In keeping with his wishes, Stan’s remains were cremated, and his ashes will be interred at the family plot in Elba, Idaho. A memorial service will be held at the Elba Church on Saturday, September, 26 at 10:00 a.m., with graveside services following.
