Alice A. Spackman

HEYBURN – The Queen of Halloween left the party on July 9, 2025. Alice Allen was born August 30, 1935, to Mary Ellen Calkins and Lorenzo Preece Allen, at a little house outside of Rupert, Idaho. She was the 13th and last child born to Mary and Lorenzo. When she was around six months old, her father was called on a mission, and Alice, being a daddy’s girl, didn’t want to eat and got rickets.

Times were very difficult, they had to make their own fun, sometimes making igloos as high as they could in the winter. Living in Idaho where the wind blows, she would tie a string to a tumbleweed and fly it like a kite. Living in Acequia, the sand would drift across the road and often her father had to hitch up the horses and pull cars out of the drifts. Most of the time they never had a car.

It was three miles to go to church; she remembered walking twice a day, as that was way before the block system and our current two-hour block time. One day her oldest sister, Anna, put her on her shoulder to carry her and she stumbled and fell and tore her knees. Mom ended up with a broken collar bone.

Mom enjoyed school, she was a top reader and speller. Her teacher sent a note home stating Alice was so advanced in school that it led to boredom and disrupting the class, so her teacher requested that she bring some hand embroidery to keep her busy. She hated doing hand work and didn’t complete it until she was married. She was very talented in many areas, including poetry, and she could do most anything she put her mind to.

When she was 15, she double dated with her sister, Iris, and met guys too old for her. She met Howard Schneider, who sweet talked her into eloping. They had three children, Larry, Kathie and Kevin. They divorced after about thirteen years, then later remarried and had Kerry and Kim. This marriage also didn’t last. She was a single mother for many years until marrying Carl Paris. After his passing, she was again a single mother. She had many jobs through the years, ranging from a potato picker to telephone operator, selling houses, and her very favorite, selling jewelry.

She started attending the singles’ activities where she met Stuart Spackman. They were married May 10, 2003, in the Idaho Falls Temple. She loved Christmas and Halloween. She was so excited to dress her husband up in crazy costumes. They were able to travel a lot and attend many temples. They served a mission in Salt Lake City, Utah, and worked in the Boise, and later, Twin Falls temples.

She is survived by her husband, Stuart Dee Spackman; her children, Kathie (Rick) Brown, Kevin Schneider (Patty), Kerry Schneider (Jeannie), and Kim (Angela Schneider); stepchildren, Tracy (Denise) Spackman, Robin (Gene) Price, Terry (JoEllen) Spackman, Laurie (Donnie) McNabb, and Portia Higens; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Lorenzo (Buddy) Allen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 11 of her siblings; her son, Larry Schneider; and grandson, Kevin L. Schneider.

The family would like to thank all who served her at Highland Estates for their kindness and care.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Heyburn 1st Ward, located at 530 Villa Dr., in Heyburn. Burial will follow at Rupert Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and at the church on Wednesday, from 10 until 10:45 a.m.
