BURLEY – Nadine Baker Phelps, age 94, was called home to her Heavenly Father on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at her home on Almo Avenue in Burley, Idaho, where she had resided for the last seventy-two years.
Born Nadine Barbara Lanier on October 13, 1930, in Stanley, Idaho, the beloved first child of Barney Dennison Lanier, 29, and Nellie Barbara (Merritt) Lanier, 18. She was soon joined by a baby brother and ended up being the oldest of ten siblings, Wayne Dennis, Franklin Jay, Melvin Fredrick, Bonnie Nell; twins, Louise Fanny and Lucille May, Merritt Earl, Barney Don and Sandra Lee.
Nadine grew up on a ranch just outside of Stanley, Idaho, in the picturesque Sawtooth Valley. Her childhood was spent helping on the ranch, caring for her younger siblings, and enjoying family gatherings with a large extended family nearby. She attended school in Stanley until she graduated.
In the fall of 1946, Nadine met Eugene “Pat” Patrick Baker, 29, of Burley, Idaho. They fell in love and were married on April 27, 1947, at her parents' ranch in Stanley, Idaho. The couple settled in Burley to be closer to Pat’s family, sharing 30 wonderful years together until his passing in 1977. Nadine and Pat were blessed with three children: Barney Eugene (born 1948), JoDeen (born 1950), and Clarence “Rocky” Lanier Baker (born 1954). Nadine's family grew to include ten grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren, as well as seven great-great-grandchildren, all of whom carry on her legacy of love.
After Pat's passing, Nadine devoted herself to her family, friends, church and community. In 1987, she met John Phelps, and they were married in a small ceremony at her home on February 13, 1988. Together, they enjoyed traveling with their camper and making memories with friends in the Good Sam's Club. John passed away on January 14, 2016, at the age of 87.
Nadine was known for her warm heart, loving spirit, and remarkable talents. She took great pride in being a homemaker creating a welcoming environment for all who entered her home. Her sewing and crocheting skills were widely admired, and her creations are cherished by those lucky enough to receive them. She was also an exceptional cook, with family favorites including Oriental Chicken Coleslaw and Hamburger Quiche.
A dedicated member of the Burley United Methodist Church, Nadine made lifelong friendships and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Her unwavering faith and generosity left a lasting impact on her community.
Nadine is survived by two of her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren, and countless family members and friends. She is reunited in heaven with her parents, Barney and Nellie Lanier; husbands, Pat Baker and John Phelps; siblings, Wayne, Mel and Don Lanier and Bonnie Williams and Lucille Allen; her son, Rocky Baker; two grandchildren, Aaron Hugh and Rebecca Dawn, and two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Mathew Baker.
