Alton Lee Tremayne

Jun. 21, 1935 - Nov. 21, 2024

Date of Service: Dec. 5, 2024

BURLEY – Alton Lee Tremayne, an 89-year-old resident of Burley, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2024, in Heyburn.

The last of twelve children born to Matthew and Margaret Tremayne in Albion, Idaho, “Al” Tremayne was raised in a two-bedroom Sears and Robuck home during the Great Depression and World War II. Dad lived a tough but charmed life and enjoyed all of his nine decades to the fullest.

Alton grew up surrounded by brothers, sisters, and friends playing sports and hunting and fishing. He received his education from the Albion Normal School student teachers and the streets of Albion. His athletic talent led coach Budge to recruit him to play quarterback for Burley High School and there he met his wife, the love of his life, Donna Gaskill.

Mom and Dad never completed high school and as teenagers they started a family, worked hard, and chased the American Dream. Alton took a job with United Oil Company and delivered heating oil and petroleum products around the Mini-Cassia area. After several years, Dad bought the business and managed the company until he sold it in the late 1970s. Without any formal training, Al operated a successful service station in large part due to his friendly, powerful personality, and his children learned valuable life lessons while filling gas tanks, washing windows, and checking oil.

After Dad retired, he focused on helping Mom with her banking career. Her promotions took them to Boise where they lived until she retired. But Donna was a super star, and she started a second career with Discover that took her and Alton around the Pacific Northwest as Mom became one of the leading salespersons in the country. With her second retirement, Alton and Donna returned to live out their lives in Burley spending time with kids and grandchildren.

Dad always loved sports, especially fishing and horseracing! He learned to play golf late in life so that he “could spend time with his kids,” and he never played very well but he always had fun. And he attended almost every activity, with Donna by his side, (games, plays, weddings, funerals, lectures) that involved his children.

Alton is preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters; his wife of 66 years, Donna; and his son in law, Rex Schorzman. He is survived by his sons, Michael (Debra) Tremayne, Russel (Dounia Matthews) Tremayne, Paul (Sharon) Tremayne; his daughter, Lisa Schorzman; ten grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Special thanks to Darlene Erikson for sharing her time and friendship with Dad during the past few years. And our family is very grateful for Kathy and the many caregivers that helped comfort him. Brothers Mike, Russ, and Paul are especially thankful for our angel, little sister Lisa, who cared for Dad during his last days in her home, on the banks of the Snake with a beautiful view of Mount Harrison.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, at First Christian Praise Chapel, located at 1110 8th St., Rupert, Idaho.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home of Burley.

From SANDRA TREMAYNE:
Uncle Alton had a way of making the simplest moments unforgettable. Sitting with him at the service station, talking and laughing, or casting a line on the bank together—those are memories I’ll treasure forever. He had such a big heart and a way of bringing warmth and joy wherever he went. I’ll miss him deeply, but I’m so grateful for the love and lessons he shared with all of us.
