BURLEY, IDAHO – Roland Charles Bean unexpectedly passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, in Ogden, Utah, at his daughter’s home due to complications following knee surgery.

He was born March 20, 1943, to Raymond Augustus and Delma Lucile Garner Bean, in Burley, Idaho. He was the third child of eight children, three boys and five girls. He was raised on the family farm located south of Burley where he and his siblings had many adventures together-especially with his brother, Daryl. They were only 19 months apart and were two peas-in-a-pod…always getting into mischief! Roland was very social and outgoing. He was always encouraging and willing to do whatever he could to help others, especially his family and those close to him.

Roland graduated from Burley High School in 1961. During high school he was a three-time state Water Ski Champion and received many awards, along with offers to ski professionally in Florida. Following high school graduation, he attended Idaho State University Auto Repair and Refinishing School in Pocatello, Idaho. In July 1964 he married Karen Loveland in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple. Together they had four children, Wayne, Brian, Lori, and David. Roland and Karen later divorced.

On January 4, 1979, Roland married Denise Dixon in the Ogden Utah Temple and filled the father role to her two children, Danielle and Ryan. Together they completed their family with two additional children, Jared and Alisha. As a family, they made many fond memories of camping in Sun Valley, family trips to the cabin in Island Park, and adventures in Southern Utah including boating and riding four-wheelers.

Roland retired from farming in 2005. He and Denise moved to Ogden, Utah, where they lived for four years. He enjoyed retired life and spent time renovating their backyard with his childhood Massey Ferguson tractor, traveling to St. George, Utah, and having family parties. He and Denise later divorced.

Roland then moved to Heber Valley, Utah, where he enjoyed his calling at the Heber Valley Girls Camp for three years. Roland was then called to serve as the multi-stake chairman of the single adults in St. George, Utah, a calling he thoroughly loved.

He met his best friend, Arnie Carlson, and continued his “retired” life by purchasing a ranch in Kanab, Utah. Roland never did anything small and planted an orchard with 700 trees of all varieties, complete with a strawberry field, and drip systems where he dedicated hundreds of hours of work towards.

In 2018, Roland met Melissa Cox and they were married in the St. George Utah Temple on November 17, 2018. She then joined him in Kanab where they spent the next few years building a home. Together, they enjoyed vacationing and spending time with Missy’s family and five children, Tamara, Andrea, Karissa, Alysha, and Matthew.

This last July, Roland, Missy, and her family, were in a tragic boating accident on Lake Powell. Roland was completely heartbroken when Missy and two of her grandsons lost their lives. After such a devastating loss, his family and friends rallied around him where he found solace from all the love and support shown to him.

Roland was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings including elders quorum president, second counselor in the bishopric of the Pella First Ward, and stake high councilor to which he was assigned to oversee the original church welfare farm for many years. He held a special place in his heart for the Boy Scouts of America program. He was a lifetime member and served countless years as Scout Master, Blazer leader, and was very proud to have helped many young men receive the rank of Eagle Scout, including his five boys and his nephew, Jason. At the time of his death, he was a High Priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Daryl Bean; sisters, Marlaine Peterson and Lila Church; brother-in-law, Vaughn Church; wife, Melissa Cox Bean; and two grandsons, Zennif Cox and Gabriel Hart.

He is survived by his siblings, Sharla (Bryan) Bessire, Bruce (Barbara) Bean, LaRae (Brad) Hansen, and Lynnette Martin; brother-in-law, Alan Peterson; children, Wayne (Holly) Bean, Lori Allen, Brian (Julie) Bean, Dave Bean, Danielle (Tregg) Bauer, Ryan (Hope) Arave, Jared Bean, and Alisha (Tyler) Seal; 26 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 16, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Pella First Ward, located at 152 W. 400 S., in Burley, with his son, Bishop Wayne Bean, officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley.

Family and friends will be received from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, November 15, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th Street, in Burley, and from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, preceding the funeral, at the church.

From Alec Ryan Arave:
Grandpa Roland was an amazing Grandfather that I hold many fond memories with. I remember all the times that he would come and stay the night at our house when I was still a small kid and he would always be so loving and kind to me and my two sisters. Every morning he was at our house he would get everybody up early and he would take us all to go get a McDonald’s breakfast and have an amazing time with us grandkids. Grandpa Roland was always trying to encourage the best out of me even though I was a very reserved kid. The only regret I have in our time together is that there wasn’t more of it. Grandpa will be loved and missed by so many people.
