OAKLEY - Basil K Fairchild, age 85, of the Basin, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at his home.

He was born December 24, 1938, to Silas Asahel and Verla Kidman Fairchild. He was the third child born into their family in “The Basin,” five miles east of Oakley, Idaho, where Basil lived all his life.

After college, Basil taught at Burley Junior High School where he began as a P.E. coach and Social Studies teacher, but ended up in the math department the majority of his career. He taught for 35 years where he especially loved the great friendships he developed with fellow teachers. Basil also ranched on the land surrounding his home where his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather worked the land from 1878.

After retirement, Basil and Rowene enjoyed traveling the world, antiquing, attending auctions, and live entertainment. They also loved spending time with kids and grandkids who live all over the country.

Basil Fairchild is survived by his wife, Rowene Fairchild; and their children, Bret Jenkins (Angie), Eugene Jenkins (Michelle), Molly Fini, Joseph Jenkins (Tammy), Paula Coggins (Deven), Cassie Douglas (David), Ivy Godwin (Jared), Brian Osterhout, Jeffrey Osterhout (Shantelle), Heidi Holland (Undrae), Joshua Osterhout (Kellsey), Katie Wilsey (Anthony), Kelli Morales (Luis), and Robert Osterhout (Kristi). From James Dunnihoo :
Basil was and still is a great man. I'm not from Idaho but I know more about, "The basin", than I thought I could ever know. I enjoyed his stories, his history and his take on life. He is my friend and I will miss him. I hope when it is my turn to cross over he will be there to welcome me and show me around.
From Jennifer Larimore Dial:
Loved going to the roundup growing up. His Dutch oven cooking was so good. He was a gentle giant for sure. And what a wonderful posterity he’s left. I know my Dad; Jerry was happy to greet him on the other side.
From Patty Knight:
Kelli, I’m so sorry for your loss
From Tom and Donna McBride :
Oakley has lost another giant of a man. Tom and I were so saddened to hear of his passing. He was always so kind and gentle with that smile and big blue eyes. We're so grateful to know that he has moved on and after a short rest, will go to work in the ripe fields of God's harvest. Love and prayers of comfort, peace and healing, Rowene and all of Basil's family!
From Sheila B. Adams:
Nobody was a better host and peach cobbler maker
From Dena Newcomb:
He was the best math teacher. Sorry for your loss.
