Apr. 30, 1935 - Jun. 27, 2026
Date of Service: Jul. 18, 2026
AMERICAN FALLS – Dan Fletcher Poppleton, a longtime and well-respected resident of the Mini-Cassia area, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Edgewood Assisted Living in American Falls. He was 91 years old.
Dan was born on April 30, 1935, in Cache Valley, Utah, to William Barker Poppleton and Myrtle Louise Fletcher Poppleton. He was raised alongside his four siblings: Clyde Poppleton, Louise Poppleton Stout, Thelma Poppleton Creager, and Beverly Poppleton Bullen.
Dan proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and was honorably discharged.
On June 30, 1982, Dan married the love of his life, Deanna “Dee” Cannell. Together, they blended a wonderful family. Dan brought three children from a previous marriage, David, Daniel, and Kerrine, and Dee brought three children, Tarima, Greg, and Darrin.
Dan attended Utah State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Science and Wildlife Management. He went on to build an extraordinary career with Idaho Fish & Game, serving as a highly respected Game Warden for 50 years. Following his retirement, Dan continued doing what he loved most—working and serving others—by joining the staff at Ace Hardware in Rupert. In 2023, after 20 years with Ace, Dan retired once again so he could devote himself to caring for Dee. Upon his retirement, management assured him that his position would always be waiting should he decide to return. Over the course of more than 70 years in the workforce, Dan made countless friends and touched many lives. He was a true gentleman, a kind and gracious soul who genuinely loved people.
Dan and Dee shared a remarkable life together. They enjoyed both work and play, golfing at the Rupert Country Club and participating in activities and celebrations at the Rupert Elks Lodge. Dee was famous for creating memorable costumes for the two of them. They loved taking scenic drives, dining out, and gathering with Dee’s children for holiday meals. Above all, they cherished their home and yard on Hillcrest in Burley, which they maintained with great pride and care. It was always immaculate and beautiful—a reflection of the love they shared.
Dan and Dee were not only husband and wife, but also best friends and devoted companions. They brought out the very best in one another. When Dee passed away in December 2023, Dan felt the loss deeply.
Dan will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He loved his family and friends deeply, and that love was returned many times over.
He is survived by his children, David Poppleton of Hurricane, Utah; Daniel (Kara) Poppleton of Belgrade, Montana; and Kerrine Poppleton of Paul; Dee’s children, Tarima Davidson of Anacortes, Washington; Greg Cannell (Jan Banner) of American Falls; and Darrin (Tracy) Cannell of Huntsville, Alabama; as well as his beloved grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at Pleasant View Cemetery, located at 1645 E. 16th St., Burley, with military honors provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group.
Dan’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped care for him during his difficult days, especially the staff of Edgewood Assisted Living, Portneuf Cancer Treatment, and Symbii Hospice.
Rest in peace, Dan. You are loved and will be deeply missed.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home of Burley.
