BURLEY – Emma Hazel Cardon Payne, a 103-year-old resident of Burley, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Home & Heart Assisted Living in Burley.
Emma was born June 9, 1921, in Ogden, Utah, to Lawrence Marion and Julia May Wheeler Cardon. Her early childhood was spent in Inkom and Oxford, Idaho. Her family moved to Trenton, Utah, where she attended and graduated from North Cache High School. It was there she met Milton Charles Payne; they were married May 21,1941, in the Logan Utah Temple. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to the View area, southeast of Burley. Here, they raised five sons on the family farm and established a premium registered Holstein dairy. You could find Emma most days working alongside her boys milking cows or any other thing that needed done. She could do it all. Her specialty was thinning and hoeing beets. She taught her boys and many grandchildren that great skill. Just this last beet harvest Emma walked to one of the beet fields with a bucket wanting to pick up stray beets.
Emma was an avid fisherman and took every chance she could to be on the water with a rod in hand or sleeping on the bank with a hat pulled over her eyes. Emma and Milton saw the beauty in all of God’s creations and loved the outdoors. One of their most favorite places was their cabin on the Salmon River in Riggins, Idaho. They spent much time there enjoying nature and entertaining numerous guests.
Emma was an amazing quilt maker and freely shared her time and talent with many family, friends, and those in need.
Emma had a testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Emma is survived by her five sons, Eldon (Marcia) Payne of Pocatello, Lynn (Cynthia) Payne of Twin Falls, Marlin (Yaping) Payne of Seattle, Wash., Mark (Megan) Payne of Declo, and Neil (Tina) Payne of View (Burley); 25 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great- grandchildren.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton; four sisters; and one brother.
Our family wishes to express gratitude to those good people who so willingly served Emma by coming into her home, bringing meals or sharing their time and caring for her. A special appreciation to the staff at Pomerelle Place and Home & Heart Assisted Living – they were so kind to Emma in her last few months.
