Date of Service: Dec. 12, 2024
BURLEY – Richard Michael McGuire, an 81-year-old resident of Burley, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at his home in Burley, Idaho, with his devoted wife of 60 years, Sue, by his side.
Mike was born May 27, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Erma Jessie Fueling and Claude Nolan McGuire, Sr. He was raised in Panguitch, Utah. The youngest of nine children, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers, Nolan and Shelly – oh, the stories he would tell about their adventures.
At the age of 17, Mike joined the United States Navy and traveled the world. His stories about being in the Navy always included being on the USS Hornet and his time on Midway Island.
In 1962, while visiting his brother, Shelly in California, he was introduced to Shelly’s girlfriend’s sister, Sue. He always said, “His heart got twitterpated.” On October 3, 1964, he married the love of his life, Dolores Sue Smith, in Hayward, California. Together, they had two sons, Clifford Alan and Jerry Ernest.
Mike felt God’s calling and, in 1978, the family moved to Duncanville, Texas, for him to attend Crisswell Bible College. He studied the Gospel for four years and graduated in 1982. He was a Southern Baptist minister for many years and started and preached for churches in Texas, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho. Mike loved the Lord and spreading His word. He witnessed and talked about Jesus to all people including his nurses until he couldn’t anymore.
Mike loved spending time with his family. His two boys and their wives, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were the joy of his life! He always had a smile when they walked into the room.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of Burley; two sons, Cliff (Karla) McGuire of Cibolo, Texas, and Jerry (Shannon) McGuire of Burley; six grandchildren, Cliff, Colby, Courtney, Cody, Ricky, and Travis; five great-grandchildren, Ryker, Jakobie, Paxton, Weston, and Nayvee; one brother, Nolan (Shanna) McGuire; a sister-in-law, Anne McGuire; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Erma Dean McGuire, Darlene McGuire, Barbara Scott, Jessie Willis, Maurine Merritt, and Bonnie Owens; and his brother, Shelly McGuire.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, located at 1350 E. 16th Street, in Burley, where family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley.
